As Apple founder Steve Jobs said, "Innovation is often born at the intersection of different fields."

From 7th to 9th April 2025, OPEN's first Architectural Structure Explanation Competition started hotly. 30 employees from more than 10 departments, including design and R&D, marketing, finance, IT, etc., became "cross-boundary lecturers" and introduced the company's technology and products with diversified perspectives. This activity is not only a professional competition, but also a "knowledge group building" with full participation - strengthening departmental ties and enhancing employees' understanding of the company's products and culture.

Promoting Learning through Competition, Refining Professional Interpretation Teams

The competition was held in OPEN Building Structure Experience Hall, and the contestants explained the design principles, technical innovations and practical applications of the exhibits. Through physical demonstrations, interactive experiments and case studies, they transformed complex architectural theories into vivid popular science content. The judges gave comprehensive scores in four dimensions: professionalism, language expression, innovation and on-site infectiousness

Chen from the Design and R&D Centre took the experiment of ‘Pressure instability of long thin rods’ as the starting point, and systematically analysed the influence of different end support methods on the critical pressure of rods. He vividly explained the concept of ‘length coefficient’, and at the same time, combined with the case of plant support, he pointed out the guiding significance of theoretical research on engineering practice.

Meng of the Marketing Department took the torsion mechanics experiment as the starting point, and through visual comparison and case study, and combined with the Tacoma Bridge collapse case, he deeply analysed the importance of cross-section selection on structural safety, and the cross-border thinking was refreshing.

Sun of Marketing Department takes customer demand as the starting point, combines the actual cases of the project, analyses the contradiction between storey height compression and structural safety, and analyses the construction quality control of pegs in the construction of combined beams, showing the rigorousness of OPEN technology landing

Contestants from the Finance, IT, and Human Resources and Administration Departments broke down professional barriers and gave presentations with cross-border thinking, injecting new thinking into the group.

Moment of Honour

After a fierce competition, Chen from the Design & R&D Centre won the laurel, Sun and Meng from the Marketing Department won the second prize, Hu from the Purchasing Department, Jin from the Steel Quotation Department, and Chen from the Human Resources Department won the third prize. Mr Bao, Executive Vice President of Open, and Mr Hang, Senior Director of Human Resources and Administration Department, presented awards to the winners.

Professionalism as a foundation for the future

This competition is not only a vivid demonstration of products and technologies, but also a meeting of minds for cross-departmental communication in OPEN. Through the role change, the functional department staff sprouted interest in technology, and the technical and business teams were inspired by different perspectives.

As one participant said, ‘I used to think that the work of other departments was far away from me, but now I find that we are actually talking about the same thing - how to make buildings safer and more efficient.’ When financial statements and structural calculations are on the same frequency, and when code logic resonates with construction solutions, this is the unique cohesion that belongs to OPEN.
